When making a candle it is critical that you get the wicking of the candle correct. Once you get the hang of it it is not too difficult but it is important that you select the correct size and type of candle wick. The correct size of candle wick depends upon how big a container you will be using for your candle.
We have a wick size chart on each of our candle wick product pages. It is important to remember that you will need a different type of wick for different types of candle wax. Our Wedo TCR range is ideal for soya wax, we recommend that you use our Wedo LX candle wicks for paraffin wax and if you are looking for a wick that is compatible with both you could use the Wedo ECO wick.
What Happens If I use The Wrong Candle Wick
Under Wicked Candles - If you use a wick that is not big enough for the candle container it is referred to as ‘under wicked’. When you use a wick that is not large enough you struggle to create enough heat and as a result you create an effect that is referred to as tunnelling. Due to the lack of heat the wax will not melt properly around the edge of the container and this leads to the candle scent not being able to disperse properly. The candle will then end up leaving a tunnel within the wax down to the bottom of the candle. This may also result in the wick going out before the candle has fully melted.
Over Wicked Candles - If you use a wick that is too big for the container it is referred to as ‘over wicked’.The easy way to determine if the candle is over wicked is if the flame is flickering and too big. This creates a melt pool that is also too big and this then forces the wick to start to mushroom. Other issues with over wicked candles are that the candle will burn too fast and as a result the scent will also be dispersed very quickly which is not what you want. The rapid burn also causes excess heat which in some instances can cause the candle container to crack.
Well wicked candles - A properly wicked candle will have the correct size flame and will not flicker. The candle melt pool will spread right across the container to its edge and as a result will not have a carbon build up. By having the correct size melt pool will also help the candle to burn much more cleanly, which will also help to disperse the scent in the correct manner.
Scents Soaps and Candles also has a range of wick sustainers, wick centering tools and glue dots.
